Lighting the Chanukiah in New York City (2011)

I was so honored and thrilled to have been invited once again by Rabbi Shmuel Butman to light the World’s Largest Chanukkah Menorah located on Fifth Avenue in front of the Plaza Hotel here in New York City.

With me on the seventh night of Chanukkah on December 26th, was Congressman Bob Turner of Brooklyn.  In these difficult times, when the forces of darkness can seem so strong, it was so meaningful for me to be able to respond with an extra measure of light by participating in physically expressing the Menorah’s universal message of light over darkness, freedom over oppression, and liberty over tyranny.

May the Menorah’s universal light be an inspiration to all.

Shen Yun Performing Arts Debut

This January 6th I attended the debut of Shen Yun Performing arts, a display of Chinese culture, at Lincoln Center. As a Chinese History major at Brown University, I have a deep appreciation and understanding of the Chinese arts and culture. While at first I was a little apprehensive that an American audience would be able to grasp the deep and subtle meaning of this rich and complex culture, the Shen Yun did an incredible job presenting their work. To convey to an American audience for the first time the subtleties and nuances of the Chinese culture is very difficult indeed, but the emcees of the event helped guide the audience through with great ease and by adding humor and entertainment in between the performances to help relieve any lecture type presentation.
I hope that the Shen Yun performance, which will be playing in Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater before continuing with its American Tour, will help educate Americans more about the Chinese culture in a real and exciting way. Today, our diplomatic relationship with China is essential, and it is important to understand their traditions and their history in order to form a more cohesive bond with them. I am proud of the incredible performance that the Shen Yun did, and hope that many will learn from it.

Golden Monopoly Set at the Museum of American Finance

Sydney Mobell and Kent M Swig with the Golden Monopoly set

I had such a wonderful surprise visit at lunch the other day with the great jewelry designer Sidney Mobell, who originally made his business debut in a jewelry store located in the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, which my family owned and operated for more than 5 decades.

Coincidentally, Sydney was visiting New York City to unveil the 18-karat gold, jewel encrusted Monopoly set that he created and designed and which is now being exhibited at the Museum of American Finance, located in over 35,000 square feet at 48 Wall Street, a 324,000 square foot office building that Swig Equities leases and manages and owns in association with MacDonald & Cie.  This spectacular Monopoly set is on loan to the Museum of American Finance from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, of which The Museum at 48 Wall Street is an affiliate member.

It was so nice to see Sidney as it has been almost 20 years since I last saw him and the Executive Director of the Museum of American Finance, David Cowen, who set up the lunch as a surprise for Sidney.  Needless to say, Sidney was so pleased and surprised to see me and we had a wonderful lunch and caught up with one another and reminisced about all the “old” stories of the past.

Then, after lunch, I was fortunate to be given a private showing of this most spectacular piece of art.  Well done and congratulations to Sidney!!Sydney Mobell, Kent Swig ,David Cowen and John Herzog

Sheffield Garden Walk

A few weekends ago, I went to visit one of my closest friends from Brown University, and his wife in Chicago (again, thanks to frequent flyer miles!).

During my visit I had the opportunity to participate in the 42nd annual Sheffield Garden Walk where I was able to view many of the beautiful private gardens in one of the great neighborhoods of Chicago.  To see this neighborhood from the “inside” was indeed special and allowed me to understand first hand how the urban plan, with all of its unique qualities like side alleys to gain access to garages (in other cities they are called carriage houses), was designed.

Swig Family Reunion

What a wonderful experience to share with my entire Swig Family: a reunion in celebration of my Aunt Cissie’s 80th birthday!!  My two sons joined me for their first trip to San Francisco (thank goodness for frequent flyer miles!) to join other members of our family up in St. Helena (north of San Francisco) where my aunt graciously hosted all us for her birthday weekend celebration.
The weather was magical as was the spirit among all who attended.
My sons and I toured Alcatraz and went to a Giants baseball game among so many other wonderful memories that were made.
